During the project execution, the existing surface along the 1.75–mile runway, was eliminated and resurfaced with asphalt, which was grooved to enhance surface drainage while improving the skid resistance of the runway.

Work under the contract involved enhancements to airfield ground lighting and drainage.

Belfast International Airport managing director John Doran said: “The runway covers an area of 18 Wembley football pitches and the contractor used 26,000t of asphalt, all of which indicates the scale of what was involved.”

Whitemountain managing director Mark Kelly said that the firm used the latest construction techniques and working under floodlights safeguarded the smooth day–to–day operation of the airport.

A master plan has been mooted with an aim to increase the airport’s passenger traffic to 6.9 million passengers per year for 2015 and 10.4 million by 2030, as well as improving annual cargo tonnage growth to 3.5% for 2015 and 3.2% per year from 2015 to 2030.
