East Apron Extension at Belfast International Airport
Whitemountain Quarries has continued it's ongoing partnership with Belfast International Airport by embarking on a new project to expand aircraft standing at the East Apron.
The Design & Build project was carried out as an NEC Fixed Price Lump Sum with Whitemountain employing Doran Consulting Engineers as their Principal Designers.
The scheme involved the construction of a new 14,000m2 PQ concrete hard-standing area which will cater for 4 Airbus A320 aircraft.
The bulk earthworks commenced with 35,000m3 of earthworks being excavated and disposed of at Black Mountain Quarry’s Inert Landfill site inside 5 weeks. 25,000m3 of imported rock was used to make up the structural fill for the new aprons. A total of 7,000m3 of concrete supplied by sister Company Roadmix was placed during an 8 week period. As the works area was immediately adjacent to the live airfield, the area was secured by use of a high security fence converting the works area into a Landside bubble.
In addition, the Client required an upgrade to the storm water drainage system for the existing aprons by installing a 900mm diameter culvert along the front of the terminal building; this work was carried out as an Airside operation. In order to minimise disruption to the Airport Operations, the drainage up to 3.5m deep was installed in short working lengths of 30m with full reinstatement of the apron been completed before moving onto the next section.
Other works on the scheme included internal access roads, erection of 18m lighting columns, installation of water mains and fire hydrants, drainage, M&E duct systems and landscaping.
