Improving Airport Fire Safety

Improving Airport Fire Safety

Whitemountain Quarries has embarked on a key project to help firefighters at Belfast International Airport improve the quality of their training and save lives.

The scheme involved the construction of a new 5700m2 concrete training rig with a life-size steel model aircraft, complete with wings and engines.

The rig is supplied with gas as well as a full mains water supply to enable the Airport Fire and Rescue Service to train on how to tackle different types of fire in a live situation.

As part of the project, over 500m of drainage pipes and 700m of ducts were laid along with more than 2000m of new fire main to supply water to the training area and fire hydrants in other parts of the airport. The majority of this fire main is laid in close proximity to the runway and taxiways.

Around 7000 tonnes of stone were required to form the base beneath the concrete slab. Work also included the construction of a storage lagoon and reed bed system to treat water drained from around the site, a control room and various other concrete structures, a services trench, a large tank to store run off water from the training area and a range of M&E work.
