Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy recently opened the new Culmore Road Signalised Junction, a scheme completed by Whitemountain Quarries.
The roundabout lies on a key strategic route, and is an important junction for motorists with over 45,000 vehicles per day passing through it. The completion of the Culmore Junction has removed a significant hindrance to motorists at peak times of the day, eased congestion, resulting in improved safety and journey times for traffic travelling this route.
The Culmore Roundabout scheme involved the widening of approach roads to the roundabout with the construction of two new slip roads, one from the rural section of Culmore Road to the Foyle Bridge approach and the other onto the Culmore Road towards the city centre from the bridge. Traffic lights were installed within the new footprint of the junction.
The scheme was constructed in 2 phases, with Whitemountain initially carrying out Enabling Works under their DRD Term Contract and followed later with the on-line roundabout reconstruction as a capital works scheme. The project was delivered within a 30 week construction programme.
